MY LIFE AS A DJ - PART 1

MY LIFE AS A DJ - PART 1

It was early on a Sunday morning, I awoke to the sound of a coffee pot percolating. The soothing sound encouraged me to roll over and think about breakfast. Then suddenly I opened my eyes wide with a puzzled look on face. I don't own a coffee machine and I don't drink coffee. The sound was on the radio. My alarm clock had turned on the WREK radio station from GA TECH in Atlanta. For at least 15 minutes, the station had been playing the sound of coffee percolating. ... weird. ... cool.

Now this was back in 1985, before you could hear anything you want anytime on the internet. This was new, unique. Where else could you hear coffee percolating on the radio?!?

I kept listening, and the next "song" on the station was the sound of a man trying to get out of a box. He didn't talk; he just grunted and painted an unforgettable audio picture. Is that garbage? Is that too off the mainstream to be on the radio?

Well, it wasn't too far out for WREK. And it wasn't too far out for me. I was "in" and already heading down the road to one day be a DJ at WREK.

Every Superhero has an origin story; this was mine.

50 years - Pow! Zap!

February 4, 2016

Today's scene is psychedelic, kinetic and wild, a free swinging world of mad, mad mod and the big beat takes over au go-go from The Strip to Carnaby St. The big names of rock and soul that geared the world for their kind of action are here, blasting and groovin' for your own freak out! Pow! Zap!

... or so say the liner notes from the 1966 LP album GROOVY GREATS, Electronically Enhanced for Stereo. Can you believe it's been 50 years since you first put that vinyl saucer on your plastic turquoise turntable. They really knew their stuff back then.
